Unicorn HAT jumper cables

Hi I'm trying to link up my unicorn HAT using jumper cables on pins 2, 6 and 12. However when I do that and run a program to turn on all the lights only the lights (0,1), (0,2), (0,3) and (0,4) comes on. If I attach it as a normal HAT it all works fine but I want access to the other pins. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?
